Welcome to our anonymous ftp server.
Please note:
0. To retrieve files, you need the following programs
(and know how to use them):
a) ftp (hmm... you ARE reading this already, so I suppose you've got ftp)
b) 16-bit compress/uncompress in order to be able to uncompress
files ending with .Z (available from the file compress.shar)
c) tar for files containing the string .tar in their name
d) sh (or compatible shell) for .shar files
e) cat (and output re-direction) for .split.?? files
f) gzip-package in order to be able to uncompress
files ending with .gz or .tgz (== .tar.gz)
(available from the file /pub/gnu/gzip-<version>.shar.Z)
g) for some strangely packed files you may need atob/btoa
(available from the file atob.shar)
Our ftp server understands REGET. That means, if your connection breaks
down before requested files are completely transmitted you can restart
at that position - simply use the command "REGET" instead of "GET". If your
ftp client does not support REGET install a recent one; sources can be
found in /pub/net/ftp.
There is an INDEX of all files of the public directory /pub;
automagically updated every night (between 1am-2am local time).
The path/name of this index is "/pub/index.Z"; the contents
are 16-bit-compressed (essentially) "ls -lR /pub".
The index is also available in gzip-ped format as /pub/index.gz;
both indices are fully ARCHIE conformant.
1. DO's
a) when asked for the ftp password, give your valid e-mail address
b) make sure your system hasn't got the stuff you want to get
c) make use of the /incoming directory *only* for sending stuff
2. DON'T's
a) please don't give a spoofy e-mail address. This may result in
denial of ftp-access to our server for your host or subdomain(s)
b) forget to set binary mode where appropriate
(especially with .gz .tgz .Z and .tar files)
c) put anything in any directory other than /incoming
d) don't send a lot of stuff unless it's requested
e) DON'T upload anything without contacting the administrators
of this server first.
Please note: * NO AMIGA / ATARI / MS-DOS stuff on this machine
* !!! THERE IS NO SHAREWARE ON THIS MACHINE !!!
* The "R" flag of "ls" is intentionally disabled;
please get the current index by fetching
the file "/pub/index.Z" or "/pub/index.gz"
* There is _no_ ftp-mail-server running (nor planned)
* The fixes under /pub/sun-fixes are provided
EXCLUSIVELY for Universities within Germany
* By retrieving data from this ftp server, you're
accepting the rules given in this file and in the
file COPYING_POLICY.
Legalese note to the users from within Germany:
Anwender aus dem Bereich der Bundesrepublik Deutschland werden
zusaetzlich ausdruecklich auf die Regelungen in AGB hingewiesen.
Feel free to contact ftp-adm@cs.uni-sb.de in case of problems.
