  9. Welcome to our anonymous ftp server.

  11. Please note:

  13. 0. To retrieve files, you need the following programs
  14.    (and know how to use them):
  15.  
  16. a) ftp (hmm... you ARE reading this already, so I suppose you've got ftp)
  17. b) 16-bit compress/uncompress in order to be able to uncompress
  18.    files ending with .Z (available from the file compress.shar)
  19. c) tar for files containing the string .tar in their name
  20. d) sh (or compatible shell) for .shar files
  21. e) cat (and output re-direction) for .split.?? files
  22. f) gzip-package in order to be able to uncompress
  23.    files ending with .gz or .tgz (== .tar.gz)
  24.    (available from the file /pub/gnu/gzip-<version>.shar.Z)
  25. g) for some strangely packed files you may need atob/btoa
  26.    (available from the file atob.shar)

  28. Our ftp server understands REGET. That means, if your connection breaks
  29. down before requested files are completely transmitted you can restart
  30. at that position - simply use the command "REGET" instead of "GET". If your
  31. ftp client does not support REGET install a recent one; sources can be
  32. found in /pub/net/ftp.
  33.  
  34. There is an INDEX of all files of the public directory /pub;
  35. automagically updated every night (between 1am-2am local time).
  36. The path/name of this index is "/pub/index.Z"; the contents
  37. are 16-bit-compressed (essentially) "ls -lR /pub".
  38. The index is also available in gzip-ped format as /pub/index.gz;
  39. both indices are fully ARCHIE conformant.

  42. 1. DO's

  44. a) when asked for the ftp password, give your valid e-mail address
  45. b) make sure your system hasn't got the stuff you want to get
  46. c) make use of the /incoming directory *only* for sending stuff

  49. 2. DON'T's
  50.  
  51. a) please don't give a spoofy e-mail address. This may result in
  52.    denial of ftp-access to our server for your host or subdomain(s)
  53. b) forget to set binary mode where appropriate
  54.    (especially with .gz .tgz .Z and .tar files)
  55. c) put anything in any directory other than /incoming
  56. d) don't send a lot of stuff unless it's requested
  57. e) DON'T upload anything without contacting the administrators
  58.    of this server first.

  60. Please note: * NO AMIGA / ATARI / MS-DOS stuff on this machine
  61.              * !!! THERE IS NO SHAREWARE ON THIS MACHINE !!!
  62.              * The "R" flag of "ls" is intentionally disabled;
  63.                please get the current index by fetching
  64.                the file "/pub/index.Z" or "/pub/index.gz"
  65.              * There is _no_ ftp-mail-server running (nor planned)
  66.              * The fixes under /pub/sun-fixes are provided
  67.                EXCLUSIVELY for Universities within Germany
  68.              * By retrieving data from this ftp server, you're
  69.                accepting the rules given in this file and in the
  70.                file COPYING_POLICY.
